Dave and I returned to Great Yarmouth for the NSRA Fun Run for the second year. We travelled to Norfolk a day early via
Bressingham Steam and Gardens. We did the obligatory train ride on their narrow
gauge railway and walked around the beautiful gardens before going on to Yarmouth.
We ate traditional coastal fish and chips at Chico’s indoors due to the chilly weather on the seafront after declining the 32 ounce steak dinner. (dinosaur?)!

This time we struck lucky with a guest house very close to the Racecourse. This
is my trip advisor review:
We spent
4 nights in a comfortable bed and enjoyed excellent breakfasts. The guest house
effectively combined tasteful traditional décor with a modern bathroom and
bedding. Our hosts were welcoming, friendly and paid attention to detail giving
us little extras in our room including fudge and biscuits as well as an
assortment of beverages. The rooms were quiet, a little way from the sea front
but close to the racecourse where we were attending a weekend car event. Worth
every penny!”
Caister Castle |
Before the event started we paid a visit to Caister Castle which has a nice little Motor Museum. The NSRA wanted to take the cruise there but they don't open Saturdays not even for 200 beautiful Hot Rods!
For us it
was highly unlikely this fun run would reach the pinnacle of last year’s event
and it didn’t. The weather wasn’t brilliant. We had one of those famous East
coast mists for much of the weekend and it even poured with rain on the
Saturday (probably the only place in the country).
The
highlight was the Friday evening cruise which took us out in the countryside stopping
off at the Horsey Windpump on the Broads and cruising down the front. We ate in the Joyland Diner which was a decent meal
with hearty portions. night before
returning to the Race course for the evening entertainment. Friday was the
twangy music beloved of so many hot rodders but not us and Saturday we had the
Blues Brothers.
This is what the cruise route should have looked like. |
This is what it actually looked like. |
The cruise route was lovely
but it was disappointing that the promenade wasn’t closed off for us to park up
this time so it didn’t have the same vibe about it.
Gorleston on Sea Promenade |
Gt Yarmouth Seafront in the East Coast mist |
I shall never forget the
show and shine on the Sunday. It was a beautiful clear sunny and warm day. Suddenly
there was a chill in the air. We looked up to see this mist literally rolling
in from the sea just like in a horror movie and we were quickly engulfed in it.
Weird.
We like
to stay over for the Sunday night as it makes the day more enjoyable if you
don’t have to rush off home. The Stapletons, the Jones and us went over to
the Bridge Inn in Acle, a lovely pub overlooking the Broads and with lovely
staff but we were surprised at how average the food was. The previous evening
we ate at The Avenue Pub in Beatty Rd for half the price and the food was
excellent. We discovered on Sunday though that some of their clientele struggle
to hold their drink. A fight broke out outside between a young man, an older
man and even the woman got hit by the young man only for it turn out to Dad,
Mum and son!
Reedham Ferry |
Thetford Forest |
Monday we
did our now traditional cruise, the long way home with Vicky, Russ, Ricky, Gary
and Julie. This time we revisited part of the cruise route to see the rhododendrons
we hadn’t fully appreciated due to the tipping down rain on the Saturday,
across Reedham Ferry, just because we could, a stop off at Thetford Forest for
lunch before heading off our separate ways. Another excellent weekend all
round.
